life in better handwriting
These are nice life-in-pen blogs, elodie g's anglo-french cartoon vie, and the all-francophonie melancholic alustriel. If only all of life was just a pen and some paper. And that French handwriting always makes me sad; the French, the Germans, the Italians, the Russians - each have their distinctive handwriting styles, which they are all taught at schools. Now if you meet a Brit, we all have different styles. I feel quite sad and annoyingly proud about that. Speaking of different ways of speaking, I have begun my task of listing all of the world's languages, modern, old and dialect, on this blog: with tongues. |

Bush: "Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid"... We The People: "NO!"
So, Fear: let us see how it affects us. A website devoted to the culture of NOT fearing the terrorists exists, offering a sun of hope in the fog of despair: we're not afraid. Ordinary people not just from London but around the globe are showing us that this world is ours, and cannot be taken away from us by fear. Now consider the news I just heard on BBC News 24. The US Government has banned US Soldiers and Military Personnel from entering London. That is anywhere within the M25. They are not allowed in. Now, they can go and invade Iraq, or anywhere else their braindead President/Commander-in-Chief/Doughnut orders them to, but not go to London. If that's what they are saying to their soldiers, what can they be saying to their citizens??? The Promotion of a Climate of Fear. That's his agenda. Bush is also using the London bombings as an excuse for a more aggressive stance in the war on terr'r: "The best way to defend America is to stay on the offence." Has he learnt nothing? He certainly remains offensive to me. Bush is the real terrorist. |

Londonistan?
...well that didn't last long! Seems the US Army have decided London is safe after all. But the American Press don't see it that way, according to the Guardian (p5, 12/07/05). The front pages of many US newspapers are calling our city 'Londonistan', calling London a 'hotbed of Islamic fundamentalism' and saying that 'bombers travel freely, police cannot.' Excuse me??! Does that show the absolute height of ignorance or what?! Apparently one numbskull called Roger Cressy says that London is 'the most jihadist hub in western Europe'. Why exactly? Because we have a lot of muslim communities here? Because we allow them to pray and preach freely (what we in Europe call 'freedom of speech', I don't know what Americans call it, oh hang on it's the same thing!!!)? Is this how the US sees muslims, and Britain? 'Too squeamish about respecting muslims' rights': that is how one Larry Johnson describes the UK. What is that supposed to mean? Michael Moore, in Bowling For Columbine, illustrates how America is beset with fear on account of the scaremongering media. This appears to be absolute proof, and tells Americans in no uncertain terms, 'avoid travelling to Europe if you wnat to live! avoid non-Christians!' And if you think I over-react, I can tell you that my wife, who is American and works for a US university in London, has told me that their agent in the States advised London-bound students not to tell anybody they were American, in case they were attacked. Believe me, that is how ridiculous fear can be, and he who fears the world begins to hate the world, and the world suffers. |

More and more victims are being named. This is where it gets very upsetting. And it seems that my sister knew one of the victims, too. What I find distressing is seeing where many of those who died travelled from that morning - every part of London, and beyond. It could have been any of us. Really brings it home. But what is interesting, but not at all surprising, is that the victims came from all over the world. According to the names given in the Standard, they came not only from Britain, and of all ethnic backgrounds and religions, but were Polish, Romanian, Turkish, Vietnamese/American, French/Tunisian, Nigerian, Iranian, Italian, Israeli, and Sri Lankan. People that came from all over the world to live in the most multicultural city on Earth. The rest of that city will be observing two-minutes silence tomorrow. |

velodream
The creatives anonymous group founded by Roshan is to meet again next Tuesday down in Chancery Lane, and he's set homework: using the sentence I woke up drunk again as a starting-block, write something, exercise style, let it inspire you, all that jazz; i might even do an animation, if i have time. Thing is, R & I went out last night for a drink in the London sunshine, so although I didn't actually wake up drunk, I woke up having been drunk, which is nearly the same thing. And you know what I discovered? when you have been drinking, and you go to sleep, dreams are more vivid, they make more sense, there are more characters. Dream world is more of a real world. And last night I dreamt that I was back at Edgware School, but with all the people I have met since leaving the place. And it kept raining; and every time it rained they would close the building. And I kept meeting old friends, old girlfriends, and I kept showing them all my wedding ring, look at me I'm married now; and that was it. Dreams, eh. |

Omen Sith
Harry Potter is back, and A is reading it as we speak. I get a look once she's done. The funny thing is, I was watching The Omen 2 (Damien) last night on TV, and there is a kind of Harry Potter-ness destiny about young Damien. Except that there doesn't appear to be an anti-Damien, it all seems pretty inexorable. I can't remember what happens in The Omen 3, but I think that fellow out of Jurassic Park was in it. Nonetheless, I did notice that there was a bit of The Empire Strikes Back about the film last night. That too is a sequel about destiny, about Luke discovering who he really is and what he must do. And it is characterised by the fact that about every fifteen minutes or so somebody gets killed. At least in ESB it is Vader doing the killing (I love his murder of Captain Needa: 'apology accepted, captain needa') while in The Omen 2 it is the work of the dark forces at large, personified by those nasty dark crows. It basically means the Devil is like a big Mafia Boss, and will order hits on those who oppose him, or work out his plan. Like the Sith Lord in the Prequels. But there was a bit where Damien tries to get his cousin John to join him in his evil destiny. "I love you! You're like my brother!" he implores. "Come with me, John!" Now this was kind of how I imagined the Obi-Wan - Anakin standoff to play out. I thought Anakin would try and get Obi-Wan to join him, or Obi-Wan would try to get Anakin to turn back, but he didn't really. Nonetheless, the wording of it was very Sith-esque. N'est-ce pas? |

doctor, doctor
I had my medical yesterday, for my US residency permit. I have to await the results; mostly it seemed fine, but I always worry, what if I have something really bad? I had blood tests, and had to go to my GP for extra vaccinations, and I had a chest x-ray. I get so nervous of these things. I can't handle them at all. And the creatives-anonymous group has decided to change its name to blank page, based on the idea that a blank page can be filled, um, i think. I think it was my idea, but I can't for the life of me think why. Anyway, the meeting on Tuesday at the Knights Templar went very well, quite a few people turned up, all from different disciplines (if that's the right word), some who did the 'woke up drunk' exercise (see mine here), all very interesting interpretations. And Simon has gone to Budapest, to be a TV presenter! He got offered a job on Men and Motors, and they told him on Saturday to come out on Wednesday. It's all happening now. Good luck, dude. |
