rummy walks the plank

We were assured his job was safe. "Ah'm the Decider!" Bush said. Oh, he's handed in his resignation before, but half-heartedly - he always knew that King George would never accept it. Seems like this time, he did. The Hawk is Down. The man who, after the massacre of the Kurds, shook Saddam's hand and offered him more weaponry. The architect of the current chaos in Iraq. Will it hurt troop morale? Will it bollocks. They'll be well pleased this nutter is no longer in charge. Bye bye Don. Leave a note for Dick and George to turn the lights out when they leave as well.

flashes of the arboretum

micron pen, watercolour, and the ucd arboretum in november. In reality it's a lot greener than you'd expect but there's a fair bit of brown and gold and yellow etc. The leaves are still turning. As is the House and the Senate. this was my own personal lunchtime sketchcrawl.

yo ho ho, and a bottle of rumsfeld

watercolour pencil, pen; so rumsfeld has been walked the plank, pushed off by captain redneck ( "ah'm the decider, yarrr" ), but it's too late for the GOP, who after years of furious and uncompromising partisanship are now unashamedly calling on the democrats to stand up and be bi-partisan, and work for all the people, not just the democrats; i think bush thinks that 'hypocritical' means someone who criticizes hippos.

Let's hope dick-tater and king george aren't far behind you, donald. Stranger things have happened at sea.

sunset in a cold november

watercolour, micron .02 pen; tonight's sunset from the bike overpass above I-80 in davis at around 5pm, looking west towards the coastal ranges; the sky had been a rough and ready grey with splashes of whatever, and i rode with my back to what was in fact an incredibly pink sky. It got less pink, and a few splashes of the rain to come in tomorrow's storm started to blur my glasses. I got home, and we had clam chowder and toasted sandwiches.

grey matter

paper, pen, watercolour; a very grey and very rainy day overlooking part of uc davis. Safe on the fourth floor (that's the third floor to brits) i look and think; i always used to look out of big windows at rainy dramas, growing up in burnt oak, and also when i was in charleroi. There's something mystical about looking out at the rain. Maybe it has all the answers, or maybe it's just water falling from the sky.

"so here it is..."

We went to Arden Fair on Saturday; I don't think I'll be going back for a while. Now officially, Christmas season doesn't begin until about 5am on the day after Thanksgiving (when I really really pray for rain, to show those people lined up outside BestBuy that queuing up that early in the morning to physically fight with your fellow man/woman over the last cheap laptop in the world is really stupid, all in all). Well, everyone is already out in force, looking for the bargains, searching for the gadgets and gizmos and sweaters and shirts that can be elegantly wrapped on the 24th and unelegantly unwrapped on the 25th, and returned with a gift certificate on the 26th (at 5am). It was awful. For those who don't know, Arden Fair is a huge mall in Sacramento, and believe me, on a weekend it really is not worth the trouble.

It's funny though, because unlike in England at this time of year, it really isn't Christmas time yet. No decorations out, no festive music - sure there are aisles where you can make a start on the Christmas cards and tinsel, but everything is still decked out in the browns and auburns of Fall. It's all about the Thanksgiving turkey round here. even the commericals haven't really kicked in with the Santa Claus pap (oh, except for that awful syrupy ad for Kay's Jewellers in which Santa buys some diamonds for 'somoeone really special', honestly it's terrible). I'll bet your ears are already ringing with the sound of Slade and Wizzard; you know what's wierd, over here they don't even know how "Merry Xmas Everybody" goes or who Noddy Holder is, let alone have it ringing in the grocery aisles. In only a couple of weeks though we'll be hearing a helluvalotta "Feliz Navidad" and "Santa Baby".

I actually can't wait; I've been doing my Christmas shopping for a few weeks already, and I'm bursting to write my cards out. I love Christmas time, and this year we're going back to London for it. Oh yes. I am going to eat so many mince pies.

szia, puskas

I was sad to read that Ferenc Puskas, the absolutely legendary Hungarian footballer, had died aged 79. There have not been many players like him; I remember watching old black and white footage of him destroying Eintracht Frankfurt in the European Cup final when I were a lad (on telly, not live, I hasten to add). That's the sort of player any team wants: the Galloping Major. Just look at his stats: at Honved, 354 games, 357 goals. Bet Thierry Henry wishes he could do that. He wasn't quite so prolific at Real Madrid however - in 528 matches he only managed a paltry 512 goals.

RIP, Puskas.

(and I realise Szia actually means "hi", but it's pronounced "see-ya", alright)

quoi de neuf? anne bacheley

I think it's almost a french belle and sebastian (but without sebastian), but this is the newest bit of music i've discovered through the mystery of myspace. Very simple and identifiable, strong but nonchalant melodies, a little of the chris chinchillas but with a female and laissez-faire accent. It makes a lot more sense this way. Anyway it's the work of one anne bacheley, and I think it's pretty damn good. A lot better than that bloody scully band anyway. Check it out, allez-y. I can't stop humming 'mixtape babies'.

la nouvelle vague

Hey, there was a tsunami this week! And it hit California! Not a big one, not big enough to get people excited or anything, but a tsunami all the same. It hit Crescent City on Wednesday, the coastal town in the north of California which is most well known for a much larger tsunami that hit back in the 60s.

I got a warning, of course. I signed up a while ago for notifications of potential tsunami activity in the Pacific, and I receive automatic emails every so often, which I naturally open hours or even days after the event, making it a little useless for me (that, and I live absolutely nowhere near the coast). Still, it's nice to be kept informed of these things.

this is yolo county

watercolour, strathmore watercolor postcard; the view across the flat and marshy lands between davis and sacramento, not far from the yolo causeway. I cycled out there saturday to have a look at the land, it's not far rom where i live. In a couple of months, all of this will be largely under water, and then it will all dry up again in summer. The miracle of life.

I tell you what, there are loads of cobwebs floating around this area right now. I remember them last year, huge great big thick webs floating from trees and lamp-posts, or just hanging suspended in the air like ghostly turnpikes. It's as though spiderman has come to town and nobody cleared up. They are really annoying when you are riding your bike, I kept having to duck and swerve to avoid being tangled up in them, they really are irritating, and you don't know what sort of teeth are on the end of them.

The photo below is next to where i stood while painting the above; can you see the cobwebs? It's a funny time of year.
