sketchcrawl 15...4th street, berkeley

Yesterday was the 15th world-wide sketchcrawl, and this time i was in berkeley, around the 4th Street area. It was the best one I've been on so far, because this time I wasn't so shy, and actually stayed for the end and spoke to other sketchers while we passed around our sketchbooks, swapping ideas and tips. I was pleased to meet some sketchbloggers (such as jana and martha) whose sketches and paintings have influenced my drawing style and see their work in the flesh - very educational. I think I learnt a lot from yesterdays' sketchcrawl, and I think that's the point.

I also got to discover a new area of Berkeley I had hitherto never been to. Here's what I drew:

I was sat outside cody's books drawing this, and then i went and attempted a volkswagen beetle. yes, i actually tried to draw a car!!! micron .01 with watercolour.

frank spenger's fish grotto. Yes, i too thought it said Frank Spencer, and the fact that there is a Bette's diner about a block away made it all the more hilarious. to me, that is, i doubt many americans would get the reference. I did this in copic multiliner cobalt .03, with some watercolours thrown in. And it was quite uncomfy drawing this, i didn't enjoy it, and a bee sat on my shoulder.

I am experimenting with using these odd colours, and I quite like the effect. Two of these drawings were done with purple micron .01 pen, and two were done with copic cobalt .03 pen. Can you guess which ones? Okay not exactly the pepsi challenge. I did the last three after the sketchbook swapping session. I like trying to draw those late afternoon long shadows, you see. That flautist was playing 'the munster's' and 'bewitched' , which sound bizarre played sadly on a flute in the street.

You can see these pictures, along with everybody else's, on the sketchcrawl website.

just add water

trying another pen

today and last night; i decided to try something different with a new pen, non-waterproof, pilot varsity, black, fountain nib, having seen some incredible sketches by another sketcher on the 'crawl with just this same pen. Well, an interesting enough first attempt, but I think I'll need more practice at this style.

pen and paper and water; no watercolours...
