This is Kunst
but some of us are gazing at the stars

And so the fifth of robert arneson's eggheads, 'stargazer', is drawn, later than the others drawn in the summer. here are the rest, so you can get an idea of what the eggheads are:

illustration vendredi: garden
Ok... a little late for Illustration Friday, (theme this time: GARDEN) but here we are. Originally it was a horizontal strip, but for purposes of it fitting here i have made it vertical. I do hope you don't mind, or I don't mind if you do hope, or something or nothing. Les pauvres nains! Les nains de la Vigie. Belgium comes into this very much so. No 2 Square Hiernaux, Charleroi 6000, in particular.

like the nights when the northern lights perform

I hear there are some very big storms in the UK right now. I hope you're all ok. But then, the UK is taking everything these days, tornadoes in London, earthquakes in Yorkshire, cardiff versus barnsley in the semi-final of the fa cup. Here in davisfornia, we are getting spring, and fast. Over the past couple of weeks, a wintery world of bare (and beautiful) trees has given way to an explosion of blossom of all colours; above, like grotbag's wig (oh, you remember her alright), the apple-green blossom on the dark brown bark, which is contrasted particularly well against the orange stucco of the building next to it (which i've turned sepia, as you can see, look there, see it).

a distant echo, far-away voices

There was some sort of bomb thing on campus today, a student, economics, had pipe-bomb equipment in his dorm or something, police got students out and arrested him type of thing, and an email was sent out to say it's ok, nothing to see here, it's all over now, type stuff, and it made the paper and i daresay the news (if i had actually seen the news), meanwhile i was busy, and at lunchtime went outside and drew the silo (i've drawn it before), place of many a lunch. how are you? i hope you are well. best wishes...P

a bell will ring inside your head

lunchtime today, beside the belfry on A street (it could in fact be the actual belfry, i had no interest in finding out, as i needed the loo, there you go. Looks like a belfry. Could do with a bat or two). and so, mccain (famous for oven chips) will be the republican nominee for pres'dent, but still the democratic race goes on, obama or hillary, last name versus first name. the colours? greys, touch of blue, with just a little green, as joni mitchell might say.

and the old mind ghost-forsaken

A lunchtime scrawl, attempting another tree, this one outisde the building where i work. Smudged a bit, I used the pigma brush pen, and my micron pigma .01 was really giving me gyp, and you can see the pale shape of the uc davis water tower just behind it there look.

illustration friday: "leap"
I decided to finally do a picture for illustration friday, whose topic this week is "Leap". Suicide Bridge leapt to mind. I used to live yards away from this sad and infamous bridge, on Hornsey Lane in north London. I'm told the same fact is true for the golden gate bridge. Drawing-wise, i don't know what i was thinking with that green but it was intentional at the time. I miss this view, reminds me of getting the 134 bus down from Finchley, or walking home across the bridge desperately needing the loo, or my dad telling me all about it when we'd cross over it when i was a kid.

because my love for you will break my heart in two

What I didn't say, and what has happened, is that this has also become a proud-tree-hugging blog. Or tree drawing, and not proud. What is pride anyway? People give it too much credit, like patriotism. It comes before The Fall, maybe it's a DJ's set-list, strange having U2 before Mark E Smith but there you go. This pride of trees (wrong collective noun) I think comes after the Fall, as all the leaves have gone. But it goes before the Spring, and wow spring is coming in thick and fast. All these little Davis trees are covered in blossom where days ago they were barren and quite moody to draw. Now, let's see if the 20six blog system goes down again, making this blog and so many others temporarily invisible..?

future artist sleeps, and burps

I said this blog would probably become a proud-dad sketchblog, and here are more attempts at drawing baby. The one on the right is the first attempt with eyes open - cheating, from a photo - but the eyes are a bit too big. you can't tell how blue they are, well they're dark grey blue in reality.

to wash the black mark clean, and to thaw the frost of years

Another tree, UC Davis, near the library. If you are quick you may still catch it like this, but buds started appearing today everywhere, and the beautiful fleshless winter is going to very soon give way to freshly painted spring. In other news: Kosovo, oh we thought that had gone away didn't we, well it's back and really biting everyone in the bum. Russia's none too pleased. Hey remember last time, when we 'accidentally' blew up the chinese embassy in Belgrade? Never mind the Balkans. Then there is the satellite thing, shooting that momma out the sky. Russia and China are none too pleased, America's weaponification of space. And the global economy! We're in recession, which means we won't be able to buy so much stuff from China, they won't be happy about that. World's feeling a little shakier today. There will always be trees. Oh, except if we chop them all down.
